Top Questions To Ask Before A Test Drive
Ethan Brooks

A test drive tells you more when you go in prepared. Here are the questions worth asking before you turn the key.
Ask About Service History First
Before you even start the engine, ask to see maintenance records. A seller who can produce clear, consistent documentation is giving you a strong early signal about how the car has been treated.
Clarify Accident And Repair History
Ask directly whether the vehicle has been in an accident and, if so, what was repaired and by whom. A confident, specific answer is far more reassuring than a vague reassurance that nothing happened.
Ask Why The Vehicle Is Being Sold
The reason behind a sale can reveal useful context, whether it is an upgrade, a change in family needs, or something more concerning. Most honest sellers will answer this directly without hesitation.
Confirm What Is Included In The Price
Spare keys, floor mats, service records, and any remaining warranty should be confirmed before you commit. Assuming these are included without asking can lead to disappointment after the sale.
During The Drive Itself
Test the car in conditions similar to your normal driving, including highway speed if possible, and pay attention to unusual noises, vibrations, or warning lights. A short parking lot loop rarely reveals the issues that matter.
